Dexter star Michael C Hall has opened up about the show’s controversial original ending, admitting it was “infuriating for people”.
The hit show, which came to an end in 2013, is set to be revived for a 10-part Showtime series, with Michael C Hall returning as the titular serial killer as he relocates to a town called Iron Lake in Upstate New York.
Of course, fans of the show will know that the original ending was perceived as less than satisfactory, Hall admitting that they were “running on vapor” by the time the show concluded.
“It’s been gratifying and I think the show ended in a way that was pretty mystifying at best if not infuriating for people, but that at least set the stage for us to return and answer more definitively what the hell happened to this guy,” he told Phil Williams on Times Radio.
“I totally support what happened, the choice he makes at the end, but as far as the execution goes, we were all running on vapor at that point, so I get it.”
The star also revealed where things stood in terms of filming, explaining that they had a few weeks left ahead of a November release date in the US.
“We have about five weeks to go, I think the whole shoot would have taken five months,” Hall continued. “It’s basically like we’re filming it as a ten-hour movie. It will be ten episodes, premiering at least in the States on Showtime on November 7.
“We don’t pick up the day after we left him at the end of the series proper, we pick him up as if as much time has passed for him as has passed for the rest of us.
“It’s been wild – he’s been relocated from Miami to a tiny town in upstate New York, so the clothes are heavier and the colors are more subdued. That helps to remind me that things have changed – or I could just look in the mirror to realize that time has passed!
“It’s not an experience I’ve had, nor one I imagine I will have again, to revisit something I spent so much time with after so much time away – as much time away as I spent doing it.”
As for whether the series could go beyond the revival, Hall teased: “I’m going to say… maybe.”
Dexter will return this autumn on Showtime in the US.
